Favorite thing: One immediate impression when taking a train or bus across Japan is to see that the houses are small and every arable land is used. Even at a truncated land by super highway is used to grow rice.

While rice grown in Japan is no doubt more expensive than Thailand or California, you can still rice fields once you get further south of Tokyo. Fields are heavily mechanized as most young people prefer to be in Osaka or Hakata and so many fields are tended by older members of the families.
