Ling across the Potomac from Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, the Maryland Heights give you one of the most magnificent views in the State. This is where Thomas jefferson should have been looking from when he exclaimed about the glories of the scenery from Jefferson Rock above the Shenadoah River on the other side. Even dour old John Quincy Adams - who was not impressed with Jefferson's accolades for the views from Jefferson Rock - would have been wowed up here. The Heights represent on of the northward extensions - not the main - of the Blue Ridge of Virginia. You can walk on trails up here leading up from the road below to either check out the old Civil War fortifications - most erected after the 1862 Federal loss of Harper's Ferry just across the river - that are found above the cliffs and further up the mountain to the north. Or you can take the 1.5 mile hike to atop the Heights - you go up first and then descend a fair distance, which means you have to go back up again. Try and do the hike in the morning as you are facing south and pictures will be better. The hairpin of of Harper's Ferry created by the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac Rivers is particularly magical on a clear morning in Fall.
