Alor Setar (formerly Alor Star) has two exits off the PLUS highway from Ipoh to Bukit Kayu Hitam (Thai border). It is located right in the middle of rice fields and the capital of Kedah State.

There is road from Alor Setar to Kuala Kedah and to the Perlis towns of Kangar, Arau, Kuala Perlis and Padang Besar.

Alor Setar has more than 250 years of history. There is the imposing State Mosque of Masjid Zahir built in 1912 right in the middle of downtown. Also a tower and state museum worth exploring.

Name of Alor Setar comes for "waterway" for Alor in Malay and "Setar tree". Stop by and try the local famos noodles "Kedah Laksa".
