Weddings. Doesn't everyone love them? This spot in Slovenia is possibly the most popular site to take wedding shots as well as to bade your bachelor/spinster-hood goodbye by a joint unison of "I Do"s!

Otocec means "Island" in Slovene and this emerald-like tree-covered island, floating in the middle of the river Krka, 7km east of Novo Mesto, has one splendid highlight: Otocec Castle or rightfully, now, HOTEL Grad Otocec.

The castle was first mentioned in 1252, a property of the Counts of Vi?nja Gora. In the next few centuries, the castle changed hands several times till World War 2, when its last master was the Counts of Marghera di Commadona.

The castle structure was finished in Baroque, and minor alterations were going on until the late 19th century. The castle has rectangular fortress walls, including four circular-shaped towers for defence and a rebuilt central defence tower above the entrance to the inner courtyard. The palazzo is flanking the castle walls, reaching to the inner courtyard. The castle chapel used to stand in the courtyard wing and was later moved to the Western defence tower. The castle was burnt down in 1942 by the Partisans but later repaired. The castle was declared a cultural monument of national importance in 1999 and found new life as a 5-stars exquisite hotel.

Today, the picturesque site is contributing its part to the wedding industry of Slovenia. In the short 30 minutes I stayed on the island, I saw 2 couples taking wedding shots and an on-going wedding ceremony. Gosh, love was in the air.

People planning to get hitched: A location to think about?
