"Elmwood" Richmond Things to Do Tip by Krumlovgirl

You can't really miss Elmwood. Of course, you can't really SEE it either, which is a bit of a problem within itself. But if you drive down Lancaster Avenue from Main Street, it is the large, Queen Anne style house on the right across from the university that virtually sets in its own park. It's a gorgeous house, indeed one of the most (if not THE most) beautiful in town. Des Jardins was the architect and it was built in 1875. Unfortunately, you can only view it if you can make the annual Arts Gala or if you hop over the fence. (But be careful because there is a groundskeeper.) Also known as the Miss Emma Watts estate, local legend says that when she died she either a) left the house and property to her cats or b) left it to her faithful groundkeeper. Either way, EKU has been trying to get its hands on it for years. If asked, the answer is because they want to make an alumni house out of it, as well as a park. But popular opinion is that they want to tear it down and build a parking lot.
