"Kirklar Kilesesi" Mardin Ili Things to Do Tip by terrycowan

This part of Turkey once contained a sizable Syrian Orthodox Christian population. The Kurdish "troubles" of the late 1980s and early 1990s forced most of them to flee to Europe and Canada. There are a few remaining, however, and this is the largest church in Mardin. The church is hidden behind walls, but the belltower is visible from just about anywhere in the old city. The church itself is interesting, with a number of icons done in the Suriani style. Picture-taking is not allowing within the church. You can purchase excellent home-made wine from one of the ladies of the church.
