construction of the south carolina state house began in 1851. the original architect, p.h. hammerskold was dismissed from the project for fraud and mismanagement. the structure had to be dismantled due to defective materials. the second architect, major john niernsee restarted the project in 1855. in 1865 general w. t. sherman's troops set fire to the interior of the state house and the building that is seen today was not completed until 1904. the architect that completed the project, charles wilson stated that south carolina's state house was "one of the most notable buildings in the world". this classical building was described by wilson as "roman corinthian" architecture. a very interesting site to visit when in columbia, especially for students of history and architecture. open to the public.
