"Saint Catervo Church" Tolentino Things to Do Tip by deecat
Tolentino Things to Do: 8 reviews and 30 photos
The first interesting site that we saw upon entering Tolentino was the large church of Saint Catervo, one of the oldest churches in Tolentino. It dates back to before the end of the 1st millennium. Over the years, it has been often changed, but today it has 3 naves in the shape of a Latin cross, incorporating parts of the previous church.
The church has a wonderful sarcophagus in the Chapel of Saint Catervo that is located at the end of the left-hand nave. This sarcophagus is one of the largest in this region. It was created out of a single block of marble!
The church also has some magnificent frescos in the chapel of Saint Catervo that date back to the epoch when this building was a Benedictine monastery.
The vaulted ceiling and walls have traces of 15th and 16th-century art.
