Third class ticket, by Heather Wood

Favorite thing: I doubt third-class even exists on the Indian railway system these days. This classic travel book by Heather Wood is still, however, a great read whilst travelling in the sub-continent.

It claims to be a factual account of a Western woman who ends up sharing a rail coach with a group of pretty poor villagers who are on a pilgrimage. They have rented a coach for a month or so and are attached to various trains to make their circuitous way around the country.

Not only does it give some fascinating insights into place from both a Western (the stotyteller) and an Indian perspective, but is also reads rather like a novel as the main character gets caught up the lives, loves and dilemmas of the group.

A great read. Hight recommened, even if you are not heading to India.
