Spain is about as safe as it gets. You will rarely find any serious crimes committed here. With that being said, petty theft is quite common in many areas...typically, the larger cities. Madrid and Barcelona are the places where you can expect this the most. My friend got pickpocketed on the metro in Madrid, depite having his wallet in his front pocket. It was done by a group of about 5 females. He said that as they were leaving the crowded metro one of them sort of touched him on the shoulder. He thought it was kind of strange and a few moments later it hit him. He checked his pockets, but by then the group was long gone and so was his wallet. I also met a traveler who lost his whole backpack (with passport, documents, etc. inside). He was carrying two bags and said that someone threw ketchup on the bag that he was wearing (he was holding the other one). He then set the bag he was holding on the ground at his feet while taking off the one he was wearing. He turned around for at most a few seconds to grab a napkin on a close by outdoor table to wipe off the one he was wearing. When he turned back, the bag at his feet was already gone. This happened across the street from the Atocha train station in Madrid in broad daylight at about 11 o'clock in the morning. These people are very fast, very good, and have little to lose. When I get on the metro in any city (not just Spain), I usually look for a seat and if there is not one available I try to back myself into a corner where I can keep an eye on everything. Just be prepared when you encounter crowded areas or have all your belongings on you because it can happen.
