And the veins grew out of this little square to cover all of Ljubljana.
Flows of people meandered in and out of this omnipotent spot. As long as you are in Ljubljana, you will inadvertently bypass Preseren Square as you crisscross the city.
Named after France Preseren, Slovenia's greatest poet, the square when seen from atop Ljubljana Castle radiates (literally from the pattern on the ground). At the spot itself, a curious chandeliar hangs in mid-air, battling the enveloping darkness of night with enigmatic illuminence.
On the north side, one will find the outstandingly reddish Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. It was like staring into an eclipse. Its presence cannot be ignored.
The Tourist train also starts and ends in front of the church.
The bronze monument to France Preseren stood at the eastern side of the square, looking in my opinion, undignifiedly scruffy. Folks loitered at the base, in transition, almost oblivious to the presence of the square's namesake. Should you care to raise your head and look up, you will notice that Preseren is staring towards the opposite side of the square, a few steps down Wolfova Ulica to the left of Hauptman House, at a terracotta window framing a picture of Julija Primac, his true love in real life from a romance that did not come to a fruitful end.
