Baixa Pombalina, Lisbon: 27 reviews and 59 photos
Baixa (pronounced Byeshah) was the area of Lisbon most affected by the 1755 Earthquake and was subsequently rebuilt on a grid-plan. This system, more akin to North American cities, is quite rare in Europe and it was part of the Marques de Pombal's design for the rebuilding of the city in the years following the earthquake.
Praca do Comercio is the main square of Baixa - in fact, you could argue it's the main square of Lisbon. Baixa is for the most part a shopping area with not too many conventional sights. It extends between Comerico and Rossio squares to the south and north respectively and is bordered by the hills of Alfama and Chiado to the east and west respectively.
Address: Rua Augusta, 1100 Lisboa
Directions: North Praça do Comércio, between Cais do Sodré & Alfama beneath Lisbon Castle, towards Rossio & Figueira squares & Avenida da Liberdade,
