The landmark of Bologna. Once, many of these towers stood in Bologna. They represented the wealth of the different families: The wealthier the family, the higher the tower. Usually, the tower consisted of a staircase with a single room at the top. They were used for storage or for representative purposes.

Torre degli Asinelli, the higher tower, is almost 98 meters high and is open for public. For a fee of 3,00 EUR, you can climb up almost 500 steps. It was constructed between 1109 and 1119. For 137 years, it was Europe's highest building.

Torre Garisenda, the smaller one, has a height of 48 meters and is slightly leaning. It was also built in the 12th century and had a height of over 60 meters at that time. Due to its unstable fundament, it was shortened for safety reasons just a short time after its construction.
