King of Bavaria, Ludwig II., grew up in Hohenschwangau castle and when he was king he decided to rebuilt the castle next to it. As he loved the old times he wanted the castle to look like a knights' castle. And as he loved the old German myths he wanted to have some parts to look like they were from Tannhäuser or Lohengrin operas. And they built him a fairytale castle.
Schloss Neuschwanstein is a 10 minute drive away from Fuessen, a charming little town in Allgäu. From Munich you should plan to spend a whole day in this area. Not only because of the castle but also because of the fantastic scenery of lakes, hills and mountains.
