  Mosteiro dos Jeronimos in Belem

Belem is a suburb of Lisbon located about 6km west of the city centre. There are regular buses and trams from Praca da Comercio as well as trains from Cais do Sodre.

Belem lies on the waterfront and it was from here that Vasco da Gama set sail for India in the 15th century. The nearby Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, probably the most impressive building in Lisbon, was built to celebrate Da Gama's safe return and his discovery of a sea route to the Far East.

Other notable monuments in Belem are the Monument to the Discoveries alongside the river and the popular Torre de Belem.
