Abergavenny is a busy market town and as such well connected by buses and trains. It's on the bus route from Cardiff to Brecon. I took the bus from Brecon and enjoyed the scenery very much.
It's also one of the few small towns in Southern Wales where you can take a train. There is a train station for north-south bound trains. Coming from London you'd have to change in Newport.
There are a number of trains going north to Hereford and Shrewsbury, coming from Newport and vice versa.
