  Wild Japense monkeys (saru-san)

Favorite thing: About 15 minutes south of Beppu at Mt. Takasaki, encountered many wild monkeys.

The monkeys are in different tribes and appear to have some order on whose turn to get feed by visiting tourists. As with all monkeys, avoid smiling or laughing as baring one's teeth is a sign of confrontation in monkey body language.

The famous Japanese monkey group which have taken into dipping into hotspring in the snow mountains or washing their food in the sea for sand are not found here but in nothern Hokkaido. These monkey at Kyushu are probably distant cousins though.
