The influences of the rich families of the renaissance is also obvious in Bologna. Many families had palaces or other structures to show their wealth and influence. This building started its history as a residence of magistrate Francesco Accursio. In 1336, it became the home of the Anziani family and it was in that time when the first parts of the city government moved in. From the 16th century on, further buidlings were added to form the present complex, including the Accursio clocktower. The big bronze statue of Pope Gregory XIII was added in 1580.

A walk around the building will give you an idea about the enormous size of this building complex as well as an overview over different styles used in this building. A really mentionable part is the Sala Borsa, the old stock exchange where the public library is situated now.
