Maribor, Slovenia: 20 reviews and 57 photos

The City?s castle was built by Emperor Friderik III between 1478 and 1483 for the purpose of fortifying the north-eastern part of the town wall. The castle is noted for many important building achievements such as the Baroque stairway, which was built between 1747 and 1759, the Loretska chapel on the south frontage, which was built between the years 1665 and 1675, and the Knight's Hall on the 1st floor with its wonderful ceiling painted by Jo?ef Gebler. The northeast corner of the east frontage finishes with a bastion, work of the builder Domenic dell' Allio from the year 1556 to 1562. The castle became a rich feudal residence for the Counts of Khisli and today houses the Provincial Museum which houses collections on archaeology, ethnology, costumes, the city?s history and church art but was closed when I visited due to renovation works on the castle, which was a shame as I?ve heard it?s very good.
