  Festung Ehrenbreitstein
by MikeAtSea

Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was built from 1817 until 1828. It replaced the Archbishopric of Trier, which had been blown up by the French in 1801. Ehrenbreitstein Fortress was considered to be impregnable.
It is regarded as a masterpiece of Neo-Prussian fortress-construction and connects the most modern military knowledge with strong geometric plans and artistic construction.
The dominating location on a precipitous rock made Ehrenbreitstein Fortress to a favorable object of artists and Rhine romantics in the 19th century. Already at this time, the view to the monument ?Deutsches Eck? was a must for every Rhine River-traveler.
Today the fortress offers more than only impressive architecture and a magnificent views: a Memorial to the German Army, the Landesmuseum of Koblenz, a youth hostel, restaurants, the visitor information of ?Burgen, Schlösser, Altertümer Rhineland-Palatinate? and many cultural events.
For me it this castle is a step in the past too, my grandfather served in the German army here.

Directions: Ehrenbreitstein is situated in Koblenz towering above the city and the Rhine Valley on the East side of the Rhine River
