Cragside estate, near Rothbury, belongs to the National Trust and is home of inventor, Lord Armstrong. In 1878 Cragside was the first house in the world to be lit by hydro-electricity.
It has one of the finest Victorian gardens in the UK and has one of the largest rock gardens in Europe. There is a lovely formal garden there that has a dahlia walk, not to be missed. There are forty miles of footpaths to explore. There are lovely lakeside walks and a labyrinth. The house was being renovated when we visited so we could only visit the gardens. I believe it is due to reopen April 2007.
