The Botanical Garden is located near where the Gruber Canal meets the Ljubljanica River to the south of the Old Town. The garden was established as the Garden of Native Flora in 1810. Under the French in Ljubljana, the oldest, still active institute for further education - Ecoles centrales - was established of which a part was the Botanical Garden. The first plants were planted on the garden off today's Izanska Cesta in the spring of 1810. The garden today contains 4500 species of plants of trees, about a third of which are indigenous, and has been overseen by the University of Ljubljana since 1920.
