Go up to the cupola in Saint Peter's - it costs a small fee, and there can be a lineup, but it's worth it... choose to walk up if your legs can handle it - the elevator is an additional fee & has longer lines.
From the inside, you get the overall view, and real impression of the enormous size, of the Church (see picture). On the floor of the Church (not pictured) are markings, starting from the altar towards the main doors, of where other Cathedrals in the world would physically overlay - one of the Popes just wanted to show off how big his (Saint) Peter was... <:)
