During our walking tour through Khiva, you certainly have noticed the huge blue cupola with the small golden top gleaming in the sun. This is our next stop, Pahlavon Mohammed Mausoleum. It is the place of the popular hero Pahlavon Mohammed, a doctor, furrier, poet and strong fighter. He had his workshop here, and after his death, his friends have built his tomb here in 1326. Somehow it nearly collapsed and was rebuilt more firm in 19th century, before the Khans have declared it their burial place as well.

We are entering the site through a huge door and small passage into the courtyard with a beautiful view of the main building and the entrance portal. The simplicity of the tile work is amazing with the mix of majolica and Zoroastrian symbols.
On the right hand is a small well; it is said that drinking the water will give eternal life and beauty (haha, no, I did not taste). Here you can also see scenes of Pahlavon Mohammed?s life, tile work of him wrestling and curing people.

We will enter the mausoleum, but, as it is a place of prayer and worship, shoes must be removed before stepping inside. The main hall is over and over decorated with marvellous majolica in deep blue colours, completely different from all you will or have seen in Khiva.
Pahlavon?s tomb is in a little room on the left side, and the coins and bills show that he is still revered today, a place of pilgrimage.
Note the doors with elaborated woodwork and ivory and garnet inlays (picture 2, although a bit dark).

It is quite difficult to take pictures inside, as the only light source is the door and a small window above. But if you look at the link I have added, you will get a fine view of the interior.

Address: Khiva, Ichon Q'ala
Directions: Head west from Islom Xo?ja minaret ? it?s on your right side (but you can?t miss the blue cupola).
