Instead of climbing the ark?s bastion, we continue our walk through old Khiva now back to the main road and Kalta Minor minaret. From here, we head left (east) until we reach a tall but simple minaret ? Juma minaret, which beckons us to enter into this marvellous mosque (of 18th century), which looks rather unsignificant from the outside.

You have to pay extra entrance fee of 1000 sum (it is not included in the general Khiva visit fee), but it is more than worth it. For me, Juma mosque was the most beautiful one of Khiva?s sights, maybe because it has this special magic atmosphere if simplicity and light.
You will step into the dark room, which is only slightly illuminated by the glimpses of sunlight, which fall through the small roof windows. But as soon as your eyes adapt, you will realize the serenity, which fills this place. On 55 x 46 m, 212 wooden pillars support the flat roof, arranged in rows of 6 x 17, 6 x 16 and once 15. Some of these pillars are still the originals of 10th century, with very exquisite woodcarving work. If you have a closer look, you will see ornaments, stars, palmettos, leaves and flowers, surrounded by Arab calligraphy characters.

I only can recommend you stay here for a while, not only to flee the brutal heat outside, but for contemplation and admiring. It will be quiet inside, as it seemed for me that even the ever-babbling tourists shut their mouths inside. Go deep into the hall, to the right, and you can even see the pillars from much better angles.

Address: Khiva, Ichon Q'ala
Directions: In the middle of Khiva?s main east-west road, directly at the simple minaret.
