The ancient city of Khiva, Ichon Q’ala, has a rectangular shape and is surrounded by a 2,5 km long mud-brick wall. It has convexities approx. all 30 m, which make it look like a big wave enclosing this fairy tale village. The city wall is not old; it was built around 18th century, after it was destroyed by the Persians. However, Khiva claims that there are still some remains of the original wall, which was constructed around 5th century.
4 gates are leading into the ancient city: Ata Darwase in the west, Palwan Darwase in the east, Dascht Darwase in the south and Bachtscha Darwase in the north.
Have a look at Google Earth (or my photo 4) – it is very interesting to see this wall and the gates from above, and it explains a bit more of the magic of this place.
I suggest that you start your visit of Khiva’s old town at its western gate, and even step outside to enter it through this gate (which I didn’t, but regret now), to get the real feeling of the magic of this city.
I will now describe my walking tour through Ichon Q’ala. I try to use the Uzbek names of each place, but sometimes I didn’t find these (or am not sure about the spelling). If you see a wrong name, please drop me a note.
You will also see that I have added links to the World Heritage pages quite often. These pages are outstanding, as they give a panorama view from many points, more than I ever can describe with my pictures.
However, viewing these requires QuickTime player.
Oh - and note that on the general map of this, north is at the bottom !! Gets a bit confusing !!
