Montalcino Things to Do: 35 reviews and 95 photos
Located a few kilometres south of Montalcino is the Abbazia di Sant'Antimo. This honey-stone Abbey looks stunning when you see it from a distance, as it is set amid vineyards and lush green countryside.
The original monastery was reportedly founded back in the 7th century, though the current building was built in the early 12th century. The Benedictine monks who lived there at the time became very powerful in the area until they encountered some problems with Siena's control over southern Tuscany in the 13th century. Things were quieter after that time, and eventually, over the years, the Abbey was abandoned.
In the mid-1990s a new group of monks arrived and restoration began. Today the Abbey is an impressive building, and daily Mass is held in the church and is open to the public - come by and check out the monks singing their chants.
Directions: Castelnuovo dell'Abate - follow the signs from the roundabout at Montalcino.
