"Luxor - Your own transport" Egypt Things to Do Tip by Stubbsn

If you go to Luxor on a package trip, don't be suckered in to buying the travel company's own day trips to the surrounding sights. You'll be herded on and off the buses, have to work to their timetables and get to see what they want you to see.
It's best to buy a decent guide book ($20/12 at the most?) and hire a local taxi. You can go exactly where you want to, at your own pace and get the experience of your own chauffeur for a few hours. It is dirt cheap - a period of 3 or 4 hours will cost about $25 and they'll stay with you all the time. Even if you go through the local 'brokers' who hang around the East bank ferry stage - the taxi-pimps, if you like - it won't cost much more - just remember to haggle.
We a had a couple of great experiences spending time with old Abdul - his taxi was as old as he was - for a day or two. Of course you'll be ferried via the odd alabastor factory - but that happens on the organised tours anyway.
We arrived at the Valley of the Kings in between the waves of coaches and managed to get into Tutankhamun's tomb on our own for quarter of an hour - a very rare experience by all accounts.

Directions: Catch the ferry over the Nile to the West bank and choose one of the many taxi's there. For slightly less pointing and confusion, accept an offer from one of the taxi pimps on the East Bank before you cross on the ferry.
