A nice, classy, relatively expensive British Pub in the touristy part of town...full of tourists, right? Wrong. For some reason, the Crown and Anchor has a huge local following--perhaps it has something to do with the friendly British owner who spends a lot of time there or, even more likely, the cute, young waitresses and barmaids in their skin-tight shirts and short skirts. Either way, it's not a bad place to drink a beer or two in the evening.

I stopped in for dinner and Monday Night (Evening on the left coast) Football. It wasn't too busy when I arrived, just after the game started (around 6pm), but it slowly began to fill up with regulars, tourists, and some Brits. I had the fish and chips...your choice of one piece of cod ($8.50) or two ($12), and beers all seem to be $5 each whether imported (Paulaner) or American (Fat Tire). They have around 25 beers on tap and another 15-20 in bottles, mostly European beers.

The entire place is decorated like an authentic British Pub, with a serious nautical theme going on (hence the "anchor" in the name and the sign inside pointing to the galley). They also have a nice outdoor patio that is heated in cooler weather.

Not the cheapest or best place around, but the draw here versus the other local British pubs are the friendly owner and plenty of locals (and waitresses in short skirts).

The Monterey County Weekly "Best Of 2006 Readers' Picks" named the Crown and Anchor as the best Pub in Monterey County!
