I was lucky to meet a few Virginians who were enough frank and direct or maybe intrigued about such stranger like me that they shared their opinions about the war 1861-1865. I easily noticed that this difficult period in American history still provokes some emotions (after almost 150 years!) and is described and judged in many ways, often in different way than in official historical sources. I found it intriguing. Later on I noticed that especially folks who live for years in the South have different opinion about war 1861-1865 than I can find in books. Let me share different opinions on the name itself.
It was the War Between the States or the War of Northern Aggression. Civil war is by definition a war fought by different groups of people living in THE SAME country (like the Spanish Civil War in 1936-1939). The war 1861-1865 was a war between two independent states: old Union (the United States of America = the North) and new Confederacy (The Confederate States of America = the South) which had own government, had a foreign policy, sent ambassadors (Great Britain was one country which recognised the Confederate States of America).
According to the constitution of the United States the Southern States had no right for secession. It was the War of the Rebellion.
US Constitution from 1860 didn't expressly lay out any guidelines for secession. Thus, there is nothing in it to prohibit secession. A union is, by definition, always voluntary - the act of choice and a free association.
Union of the states is not a train. You can't get in one day and get off the next one. You should ask and get the permission from other union members to leave them. That is real Union.
Enough to say. No comments :-). Go to Virginia and ask locals. Be sure to hear various opinions. In Poland we say: "where there are two Poles there are three opinions." :-)
