Despite its geographical location exactly in the middle of eastern U.S. coast Virginia is NOT Mid-Atlantic state, never. Remember forvever: Virginia belongs to the South or the Southern United States.

Keep in mind that "the South" being basically geographical therm has many other meanings. In the United Kingdom, "the South" is used to refer to the richer, more developed part of the country (we say "the West" in Poland). In my central (or west-east) European mind the South refers to warm/hot countries, beaches, relaxation, slow work :-), picturesque southern mess, palm, orange and olive trees etc. Simply the word always makes me smile and happy.

In the USA "the South" is used to refer to states in the southeast that seceded from the Union from December 1860 until May 1861. But the South is far more than historical therm, even today. It's a thing of culture I was lucky to touch during my southern oddysey through southern states:
- Virginia,
- North Carolina,
- South Carolina,
- Georgia,
- Florida,
- Albama,
- Mississippi,
- Louisiana,
- Texas,
- Tennessee,
- Missouri,
- Arkansas,
- Kentucky.
These 13 states created independent state called Confederate States of America. Look at the map here. Well, I didn't visit Kentucky and Missouuri which only formally seceded but I visited Oklahoma on the way to Texas.

In Virginia I have seen Confederate flag for the first time in the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond and only once in front of a local house.
The Confederate flag with 13 five pointed stars is commonly known as the "STARS AND BARS". National flag of the USA is nicknamed "the Stars and Stripes."
