"Xel-Ha and Tulum" Mexico Things to Do Tip by Dean2006

Mexico Things to Do: 627 reviews and 826 photos

One of the best things I did while staying in the Playa del Carmen/Cancun area was to visit Tulum and Xel-Ha. Tulum are ancient Myan ruins. They are fairly well preserved and extensive. It is right on the beach and makes for great photos. Lots of history. For instance, they build a small arch where if the wind reaches a certain speed , it makes a noise to warn of approaching hurricaines. I went in February and was quite comfortable, but at other times it can get very hot, so some people recommend seeing Tulum first and then going to Xel-Ha.

Xel-Ha (pronounced "Shell-Ha") is a really nice natural park with swimming, great and relatively safe snorkeling. You can pay a little more and swim with the dolphins! You can just chill out or dive, hike, swim. It's really cool. You usually spend an afternoon or morning there (4-5 hours) but you could easily spend all day there. Tours are usually combined with say, Tulum in the am and Xel-Ha in the afternoon.

Directions: South of Cancun and Playa del Carmen
