The reason for stopping over in Wellawaya was to visit the archaeological site of Buduruwagala. It is located in a forest area just a5 kms south of Wellawaya.
The site is home to seven figures of various height (the largest 16 meters tall) carved on the rock.
All figures are thought to date from the tenth century.
The central figure is Buddha in a “have no fear” pose. There are small remnants of the original paint and stucco that covered the figure.
On the left side (additional photo) there is group of 3 figures representing: Avalokitesvara (important Mahayana divinity), an unidentified attendant (left) and Tara (Mahayana goddess on the right)
On the right side (additional photo) in Hindu style are uncertain what they represent (most probably Vajrapani, Maitreya-the future Buddha and Vishnu.
The best way to visit the area is to rent a taxi. The visiting time is short so it’s wise to keep the driver waiting for you for the return trip.
