Me as everlasting objective tipwriter and a friend biked our way to Mechelen and discovered a good place to stop for a drink as the 30 degrees sun was beating on our baseballhats! It was the pub called "the old Brewery" and is surrounded in a vally situated at the food of another steepy hill. In the old days this was the place to produce and taste beer and even do politics and city's governing (a wellknown phenomenen: beer and ruling the town is stronly connected even nowadays) Now the pub has a grand terrace, wooden tables outdoors, it has a tremendous view and breathes out a cozy athmosphere. The place to be!!! the staff is friendly mainly speaks dutch, englisch and since its located next to Belgian Wallonia also french and Germans can find their way to a good glass of original beer too. The staff is fast and friendly, the surroundings are pictoresque, they have dozens of special local beers and softdrinks, the indoors is faboulouse: authentic furniture and a lot of wood paintings. This cafe goes back to 1782. Striking feauture: the pub/brewery has an old cellar like a german Bierstube with a fire hearth and wooden long tables.

Favorite Dish: Must try: Limburgean cheese, ham, Aardenner paté, all this with a litre glass of cool fresh beer for 8 euro. Also try: mosterdsoupe with bacon. The kitchen is open from 12 till 4 pm. From 8 pm the pavement terrace is self-servce. Best drink: Gerardus Kloosterbeer Double for 3 euro. The place is run by a family and also functions as a family hotel. You can eventually plan your tripsin the Maastricht surroundings and hills from this pub/hotel.

Price Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Mechelen is 20 kilometres south east from Maastricht follow the route to Aachen and turn to the right at the villaf=ge of Gulpen, then its 5 kilometres. Hire a bike at the Tourist Office or walk your way in the weadows and hills!
