"St Aloysius church" Top 5 Page for this destination St Aloysius Church - Alojzijeva cerkev Tip by Willettsworld

This church, with its extremely beautiful rococo railings, was built in 1769. The local architect Johannes Fuchs designed the late Baroque architecture and Jo?ef Holzinger made the fittings. The main altar, also a late baroque colonnade work of art, is adorned with the statue of St. Andrew and St Peter. The altar picture of St. Aloysius, with its panorama of Maribor, is the work of artist and director of the Graz gallery, Gianpaola Tunner. The artist Kuppelwieser painted the paintings for both sides of the altar, St. Viktorin with a view of Ptuj and St Maximillian with a view of Celje.

After the abolition of the Jesuit order the church was closed in 1784 and turned into a military storehouse. At this time it also lost its bell tower and the Jesuit College was turned into a military school. In the year 1831 the church was consecrated again for church purposes.
