The Drava River is former by the confluence of two rivers: the Lavant and Drau which meet just over the border in Austria. It eventually flows into the Danube near Osijek in Croatia.

The Old Town lies on the northern bank of the river where the original town grew up during the Middle Ages with a single bridge linking it with the south bank. A pleasant walk is to walk through the area known as Lent which follows the river from the circular Judgement Tower to the Water Tower and there are other longer walks along miles of river footpaths.
