The largest city on the Côte d'Azur and the gateway to the region, Nice is France's second tourist destination after Paris. Part summer resort, part large city, Nice has something for everyone. It was founded by the Greeks in the 4th century BC as Nikaia, and was later the twin cities of Nicaea and Cemenelum under the Romans. In medieval times, Nissa, as it is called locally, remained under the Duchy of Savoy for nearly 500 years while its inhabitants spoke a Latin dialect, nissart, different from the provençal spoken further west. In 1860, Nice voted almost unanimously to attach itself to France and since then French has slowly replaced the local nissart, though it is eternalised in street names in Vieux Nice. During the Belle Époque, Nice became a winter destination for wealthy Brits and Russians who built numerous grand palaces. Nice also became associated with art and painters such as Marc Chagall and Henri Matisse who have museums dedicated to their works.
