The brilliantly presented aviation displays at the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McVinnville, Oregon, make for an excellent half-day trip from Portland, or a genuine stopover destination on a roadtrip to the Oregon Coast from that city.
The Museum buildings themselves form rather a dramatic sight, rising out of leafy vineyards as you approach them after turning off highway 18. This museum is home to the famous Howard Hughes Flying Boat (the Huges H-4), also known as the "Spruce Goose". This huge wooden plane reached its fame in the late 1940s when it actually flew! The sad history of the plane since then tells a tale of the waning of the great age of aviation development as the new commercially driven era of aeroplane development came to the fore.
The museum is very reasonably priced, with adult entrance costing US$11 in July 2006. A range of other planes are on display around the H-4. You can only go inside a small display area of the H4, which is a little disappoining, but overall this is a great aviation museum. I spent three hours in here on my way from Portland to Newport in July 2006.
