Yes, Walney really does have an airfield!!
Situated at the north end of Walney, right by the coast, it belongs to BAE. Systems, Barrow's largest employer.
The Lakes Gliding Club operates from here at the weekends, weather permitting. It's great to watch the gliders while you are on the beach. It does have me worried sometimes, knowing these beasts have no engines and are purely relying on the air flows.
Many years ago a friend of mine had flying lessons from here and gained her Private Pilot's Licence. Small aircraft still fly from here and BAE operate flights to other parts of Great Britain.

Address: Walney Airfield, Walney Island, Barrow-in-Furness,
Directions: Once over the bridge from Barrow, turn right and follow signs.
