...in all Oaxaca, indeed one of the most beautiful buildings I think I have ever seen, has to be the Ex-Convento de Santo Domingo, now the Museo Regional de Oaxaca (the Regional Museum). Just as the church next door is everything that is extravagent and gorgeously Baroque, every surface covered with gilt and painted stucco - the monastery is everything that is restrained and elegant, more Renaissance in its inspiration, with its beautiful double-storeyed and colonnaded cloister, grand staircase, vaulted corridors and exquisite frescoes. Some walls are mellow terracotta brick whilst others have a delicate pearly sheen - the result of the plaster being treated with a wash of cactus juice.

This is a gem of colonial architecture - its perfection all the more extraordinary when you learn that it was used as a miliary barracks for nearly 200 years.
It was, in fact, that military occupation that almost certainly saved the building from being demolished and the surrounding land being sold as so many of Mexico's monasteries were in the years following the Reform Wars. After being handed back to the Dominicans in 1939, part of the monastery was set aside to be the museum and following considerable restoration work, this opened in 1972.
