Our rental car and the view into the Rift Valley

Kenya's Rift Valley is part of the long geological disruption in Africa caused by clashing plates of the earth's crust, running from below Lake Malawi in the south to beyond Somalia, the northeast Horn of Africa. In Kenya, the Aberdare Range is a 100-mile (160-km) string of mountains, averaging about 12,500 feet, that form part of the eastern edge of this huge valley. The area is quite heavily populated and is suitable for growing tea and other crops. However, it is also known for its outstanding lakes with their extensive bird populations, as well as the relief that its cool mountain airs can provide.

We started out from Nairobi, headed up along the Aberdare Range for the bird paradise of Lake Naivasha, stopping for a view down into part of the valley as we checked out one of many roadside stalls selling various African trinkets.
