The church known throughout Oaxaca simply as Soledad - La Basilica de Nuestra Señora Soledad (The Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude), dedicated to the patron of both the city and the state of Oaxaca, is the favourite church of Oaxaqueños. Our Lady of Solitude is also the patron saint of fishermen and the statue inside the church is richly adorned with pearls found by the fishermen and given to her in thanks for their safe return from the sea.

The church is renowned for its magnificent facade, uniquely built like a reredos - the screen behind the altar in Mexican churches, with tiers of saints. It is always busy with services and people praying so please be aware of this when you visit.

The fine stone building facing the church was once a convent attached to the church. The disestablishment of the church in 1867 saw it become the City Hall.

The square beside the church is a popular place for people to gather, the main attraction in the evenings being the many stalls selling pastries, sweets and icecreams.
