The history of magnificent Palace Ferstel goes back to 1651 when Duke Ernst von Abensperg und Traun gave the order to extend the excisting building. For a long time after the new built building was known as oalace Abensperg-Traun. In 1652 this palace became famous when the first water pipe in Vienna was installed. The palace was burnt down in 1683 during Ottoman siege of Vienna, but rebuilt soon in 1700. Its current look dates from 1856/1860 when was reconstructed by "Ringstrassen architect" Heinrich von Ferstel who was inspired from Italian architecture during his long trips in that country. During WW II the palace was destroyed again and finaly restored and revitalized in 1988/1989.
The Freyung Passage, inside the palace, is lined with elegant and exclusive shops, while on the other side is world wide famous Cafe Central. The central octagonal space of the passage is where the Fountain of the Danube Sprites stands.
