  Kölner Dom
by MichaelFalk1969

It is funny to see that foreign tourists with only a short time for Germany will never miss Cologne due to its impressive gothic cathedral (Kölner Dom). It is probably the most famous of all german churches. The view is impressive - you feel dwarfish standing before this monument and its many sky-soaring spires. Although construction began in the High Middle Ages, it was only finished in the mid-19th century. Sort of finished, because the cathedral is under permanent reconstruction. The treasury of this church is also very impressive. There are also twelve fine romanic churches within the city limits.

- Cologne has excellent museums, for instance the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, the Museum Ludwig (art museums), the Römisch-Germanisches Museum dedicated to the roman history of Cologne (former "Colonia Agrippina") and a chocolate museum (!).
- The Cologne Zoo is also worth a visit.
- The Melaten Cemetery has interesting historic sepulchral monuments
- The nearby city of Brühl has a famous theme park (Phantasialand) and a wonderful baroque palace.

Cologne has suffered much destruction in World War 2 - therefore many buildings are from the 50`s. Some medieval, renaissance and baroque architecture has been saved, though.
