The best deal in Monterey (FREE!) this walk through downtown covers many of the city's top historic sites. On this well-marked path, you'll visit various old adobes including a former house of Steinbeck, the old Monterey prison, Colton Hall (California's first constitutional convention), City Hall, the Presidio Cathedral (the only surviving building from the original Presidio and America's smallest cathedral), along with the waterfront attractions like the old customs house. The entire route is about 1.5 miles...if you visit the Lower Presidio Park, it will be about 2 miles.

My favorite spot on the tour is Colton Hall. In front of this building is a large grassy area and a park called Friendly Plaza. Friendly plaza boasts the moon tree, the redwood grown from a seed that landed on the moon! In front of Colton Hall, there are bronze plaques detailing different phases of Monterey's history... my favorite reads "1842. California Mistakenly Claimed for the United States. Believing that the United States is at war with Mexico, Commodore Thomas ap Catesby Jones, Commander of the American Pacific Squadron, captures Monterey and claims California for the United States. When he discovers this is a mistake, he apologizes and sails away."

We've realized our mistake. Is it too late to give California back?
