Adana is one of those places that cannot be judged just by driving through it. We stupidly did that--pretty much only driving through on our way someplace else. In our last month there, we were taken out by local residents. We went out to dinner, went to a sports pub, a bar, drove around and finally learned just how much this city has to offer. It's incredible. Driving through you get the sense of chaos. People crossing the roads all over the place right against oncoming traffic, generic storefronts cramped together, asphalt and concrete make up the cityscape.

This is on the main road of Adana.

Turn off and you see the real city. New Adana is quite the contrast to the scene I just painted. It has botiques, cafes, bars, restaurants, open spaces...unlimited things to do. Out by Çukurova University is more open space, wide streets, lots of vegetation and so on. Another very pretty area. Additionally, there's the Ulu Camii (Great Mosque) which is amazingly impressive on its own, the stone bridge, clock tower and bazaar. It's unfortunate we didn't explore this city more extensively but we'll return.

Give Adana a chance. You won't find much written on it in tour books--Frommers Turkey guidebook seems to skip this area completely and other travel guides only touch upon it. Perhaps because it's not a city that has immediate appeal. But that's part of my attraction to it and fondness for it, I think.

Directions: Adana is located in Adana Ili, southern Turkey
