The rooms are comfortable but basic, and the prices are budget, but where the Breakwater Lodge really scores top points is its location, right across the road from the superb V&A Waterfront, our room had views both of the Warefront and Table Mountain
Because of the location and well lit streets its a short safe stroll for an evening out on the waterfront with its many bars and restaurants

this is a busy hotel, it shares space with the Graduate School of Business and there can be a lengthy wait at reception. Its rooms are also not very soundproof but our floor was relatively quiet and we did not have any disturbed nights. the cleaning was adequate but not pristine and the towels were tiny. The car park is rather small too but if people parked straight there would have been lots more spaces

there is a small not very comfortable bar attached to the the a la carte Treadmill restaurant which serves lunch and dinner, Stonebreakers the self service restaurant is open from 6.30am untill dinner, both restaurants are in an annexe at the opposite end of the hotel from reception

Breakwater Lodge was originally built in 1859 a prison used to house the convicts who were used as forced labour building the breakwater in Table Bay, a later building with four turrets was built in 1901 and used to segregate white convicts untill 1911 when it was used for Juvenile convicts for 15 years before becoming a hostel for black dock workers

Unique Qualities: internet access is available in the Transit lounge, access costs R60 for 1 hour or is available in blocks of 10 minutes for R10
