Driving back to Reykjavik from Snaefellsnes you have two choices - you can take the toll tunnel near Akranes which will get you into the city quicker, or you can follow the coast along the Hvarfjordur. I woull certainly recommend the coastal route if you have the time. The quiet road follows the coast all the way and the views are wonderful. If you take the toll tunnel the journey to Reykjavik is only 49 kilometres the coastal route is 109 kilometres but the views make the extra kilometres so worth while!
Hvarfjordur means Whale fjord and although there is an old whaling sation in the fjord it is not that which gives the fjord its name. The name comes from an old saga which says that once a bad whale lived in the fjord and attacked the boats. Everyone fell to the bottom of the fjord but among them were 2 sons of the local priest. This priest used magical powers to move the whale from the fjord via the Botsna river to the Hvalvatn lake which was higher and so he could not do any more damager to the local people.

Directions: the coastal route from Akranes to Reykjavik.
