Being prone o seasickness, I was extremely wary of taking the Interislander Ferry between Wellington (North Island) and Picton (South Island). Heard horror stories. Fortunately the ferry was large enough and the sea was calm enough. I survived the ferry rides both ways.
Like the bus and railway tickets in New Zealand, found that there are discount fares (super savers) for ferry depending on the schedule, dates, how many days one buy ahead and so you can save a bit if you plan ahead and buy your tickets early.
Also to bring your vehicle across, booking can be heavy and it is not cheap. So many will drop their rental vehicle off one island and book another on the other island.
Another option is to fly across but it is definitely the more expensive option.
