Most people think of Venice as only canals, but, in fact, there are many small streets (called "Calle", like in Spanish) that serve many buildings. Because no cars are allowed on the islands, it is a delight to wander around the city rather aimlessly just to see what you can see. Sometimes you will be deadended by a canal, and other times, you will discover a bridge that goes over a canal that you could see from elsewhere and had no idea how to get to...;-)
